Fagin's Hike of the Week: Lake Valhalla

This is the shortcut to Lake Valhalla and on the way offers views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. Daniel and more. Wildflowers are out and this hike near Stevens Pass is a great one. The longer way is accessed at Stevens Pass and roundtrip is 11 miles. However, the  shortcut is a total  of 7 miles. Also, the shortcut  gives you easy access to side trip up Mt. McCausland.

Driving Directions: From Seattle take US Highway 2 east to Stevens Pass. Continue another 4 miles just after the highway divides. Then turn left (with great care as you have westbound traffic coming at you) onto Smithbrook (also spelled Smith Brook)  Road (FS 6700). Follow this 2.8 miles and park on left.

Trail stats: Take trail 1590  about 1.4 miles to the Pacific Crest Trail to Union Gap and turn left (south) towards the lake. When you get to the lake you have gone 3.5 miles.
