Fagin's Hike of the Week: Mt Townsend and more

This hike is in the Olympics near the Hood Canal. The suggested hike is to Mt. Townsend with great views. We did a scramble to Welch Peaks which is very close.

Driving Directions to upper trailhead:

Take US 101 south from the Quilcene Ranger Station 0.9 miles.

Take the slight right onto the Penny Creek Road and drive through the grounds of the Penny Creek Quarry.

In 1.5 miles, take the left fork onto Forest Road 27 and follow it 13.5 miles before turning left onto FR27-190. The trailhead is at the end of this spur road.

Trail stats: We started hike at Mt. Townsend trail hike to the very scenic trail. However about a mile before the top of Mt. Townsend we went left to the Silver Lake Trail. Instead of going to the lake we went to the saddle then went left (south) to scramble Welch Peaks. If you are comfortable going off trail and to scramble here is the track. If you are not comfortable with an off trail scramble then Mt. Townsend is a great option with great views!! To Mt. Townsend maps show 8 miles round-trip. Our track was just under 8 miles roundtrip.
